What is Pilates?

Updated: Mar 7, 2020

Pilates is a physical fitness system developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, after whom it was named. Pilates called his method "Contrology". Joseph Pilates opened his fitness studio in New York City, in the same building as the New York City Ballet. Smart Dude.

Pilates is known for creating long, strong muscles and a leaner look. Pilates improves muscle tone, balances musculature, supports beautiful posture, and teaches you to move with ease and grace.

Joseph Pilates, the esteemed creator of this wildly popular movement modality, said Pilates is the complete coordination of mind, body and spirit. All bodies - from young to senior, serious athlete to couch potato, strong to mending - will see and feel a difference in the way they move through the world and will awaken a renewed awareness and connection between mind and body. A consistent Pilates practice will benefit ANY body and help you do anything you do, BETTER.

“ Man should bear in mind and ponder over the Greek admonition – Not Too Much, Not Too Little.” - Joseph Pilates
